This vision statement forms part of the Greyton in 2030 Vision: Greyton’s energy focus is on sustainable lighting, heating and cooling solutions. We help design new products, services and business models that convert ecological energy systems into energy useful to humans. We focus on community energy: our community owns, generates and saves energy together for the benefit of a wider community.
Current key activities towards Greyton’s energy vision:
GTT provides the umbrella under which different organizations come together to assess the feasibility of sustainable, renewable power for Greyton and Genadendal.
At grassroots level, every household has access to such labour saving devices as wonderbags and solar lamps which are now sold in Greyton.
At a more ambitious level, GTT are working with a major solar provider to assess the best way forward to the installation of a public solar facility by establishing a pilot programme of solar panels on the roof of Emil Weder High School. Intensive workshops with children at the school have seen significant reductions in their power usage.
GTT advocates a Community Owned Enterprise to govern the power strategy which will see all benefits of the scheme being reaped by the community. This model has worked exceptionally well in other transition towns.
